Kia Drive Wise Calibration After Windshield Replacement

Drive Wise is Kia's suite of camera-based driver-assist systems. When the windshield is replaced, the camera mounted behind it may shift — and calibration ensures every safety feature works correctly. Kia shares this technology with Hyundai SmartSense.

What Drive Wise Does
Drive Wise uses a windshield-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror. It powers Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), and High Beam Assist (HBA). Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist use radar sensors — not the camera — so they are not affected by windshield replacement.

What Happens When We Replace the Glass
The camera bracket is removed with the old windshield and re-mounted to the new one. Even a fraction of a degree of shift in camera angle throws off the system's reference points. Calibration re-establishes those points using manufacturer-spec targets — our method is static only, the most precise approach available.

Kia & Hyundai Shared Technology
Kia Drive Wise and Hyundai SmartSense share the same underlying camera technology. If you're familiar with SmartSense calibration on a Hyundai, the process is virtually identical on a Kia. However, the windshields themselves are NOT interchangeable between Kia and Hyundai models even when they share platforms (e.g., K5/Sonata, EV6/IONIQ 5).

Kia recommends calibration after every windshield replacement on Drive Wise–equipped vehicles. We always tell customers this. If you're using insurance, calibrate — it's covered. Paying cash?
