Toyota Highlander Windshield Replacement — Common Questions Answered

The most important things to know before you call, regardless of your Highlander's year or trim.

How much does it cost?
$250–$470 for 3rd gen (2008–2013) and pre-TSS 4th gen Highlanders. $620–$1,350 for models with Toyota Safety Sense™, including mandatory static calibration. Call (626) 689-7975 with your year and trim for an exact price.
Does my Highlander need ADAS calibration?
3rd gen (2008–2013): never. 4th gen pre-2017: no. 4th gen 2017–2019 ALL trims: yes — TSS-P became standard. 5th gen (2020–2025) ALL trims: yes — TSS 2.0 is standard. If you see a camera behind the rearview mirror, calibration is required.
Is the Hybrid windshield different?
No. The Highlander Hybrid and standard Highlander share identical windshields for every generation. The drivetrain has zero impact on the glass part number. Any shop charging extra for "hybrid glass" is overcharging you.
Does the Platinum HUD affect the glass?
Yes. The Platinum trim on 5th gen (2020–2025) includes a Heads-Up Display requiring a specific windshield with the correct projection zone. We always confirm HUD-equipped Highlanders by VIN before ordering glass.
Will insurance cover it?
Yes — comprehensive coverage covers glass and calibration. We handle the full claim. Most 2017+ Highlander owners with comprehensive coverage pay nothing out of pocket. We bill GEICO, State Farm, Progressive, Allstate, Farmers, and USAA directly.
Can you come to my home or office?
Yes — free mobile service throughout Los Angeles. We come to your home, workplace, or anywhere that's convenient. No driving a cracked windshield across town.
How long does it take?
60–90 min glass-only. 3–4 hours with TSS calibration. Drive-away safe in 60 min with fast-cure urethane.
What glass brands do you use?
Pilkington and Fuyao Ohio as first choice. AGC is a Toyota-approved OEM supplier. Vitro/PGW as approved backup. XYG/Benson only on non-ADAS models when preferred brands are unavailable.

Toyota Highlander Windshield by Generation — What Your Year Needs

Your year and trim determine your glass type, whether calibration is required, and your total cost. Select your generation below.

⚠️
Highlander Hybrid Owners — Read This: The Highlander Hybrid and standard Highlander share identical windshields for every generation. The drivetrain (gas vs. hybrid) has zero impact on the glass part number. Some shops charge a premium for "hybrid glass" — there is no such thing on a Highlander. If you're quoted extra for a hybrid windshield, you're being overcharged. The specs below apply equally to Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
2008–2013 · 3rd Gen
2014–2019 · 4th Gen
2020–2025 · 5th Gen
ℹ️
3rd Gen (2008–2013): No Toyota Safety Sense™, no forward camera on the windshield. This is the most straightforward Highlander replacement — glass only, no calibration required on any trim. 3-row mid-size SUV with standard laminated windshield. Highlander Hybrid uses the same glass.
FeatureDetails

Highlander HybridSame windshield as standard Highlander — identical glass part number
Glass TypeStandard laminated windshield — 3-row mid-size SUV format
Acoustic GlassNot standard on this generation

HUDNot available on 3rd gen Highlander
Typical Cost$250 – $420 total (glass + labor + moldings)

Our Glass RecommendationQuality aftermarket (Pilkington or Fuyao Ohio) — OEM not required
⚠️
4th Gen (2014–2019) — Model Year Matters: Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) was introduced as standard on ALL trims for the 2017 model year. Pre-2017 models (2014–2016) have no TSS — glass-only replacement. From 2017 onward, every Highlander — regardless of trim — requires static calibration after windshield replacement. Acoustic glass available on Limited/Platinum trims. Hybrid available and uses the same glass.
FeatureDetails
TSS — 2014–2016 (all trims)Not Available — No calibration needed on any 2014–2016 Highlander
TSS-P — 2017–2019 (all trims)Standard on ALL trims — Every 2017–2019 Highlander requires calibration
Calibration TypeStatic only — vehicle stationary, manufacturer-spec targets at precise distances. 1.5–2.5 hours
Safety Features AffectedPre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
Acoustic GlassAvailable on Limited/Platinum trims — replacement glass must match acoustic spec
Highlander HybridSame windshield as standard Highlander — identical glass part number for each year
HUDNot available on 4th gen Highlander
Cost — Non-ADAS (2014–2016)$250 – $470 total
Cost — With TSS Calibration (2017–2019)$620 – $1,100 total · Insurance often covers this fully
Installation Time60–90 min glass only · 3–4 hours with calibration
🔍
Quick check for 4th gen Highlander owners (2014–2019): If your model year is 2017 or later, you have TSS-P and calibration is required — no exceptions, all trims. If your model year is 2014, 2015, or 2016, look at the top center of your windshield behind the rearview mirror. No camera bracket = no calibration needed.
⚠️
5th Gen (2020–2025) — Complete Redesign on TNGA-K Platform: Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 is standard on ALL trims including L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum, Bronze Edition, and Hybrid variants. Acoustic glass is standard across all trims. HUD available on Platinum trim. All 5th gen Highlanders require static calibration after windshield replacement — no exceptions.
FeatureDetails
Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0Standard on ALL trims — every 2020–2025 Highlander requires calibration
Calibration TypeStatic only — 1.5–2.5 hours with manufacturer-spec targets
Safety Features AffectedPre-Collision System, Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams
Acoustic GlassStandard on all 5th gen trims — replacement glass must include acoustic interlayer
HUD (Platinum trim)Available — requires HUD-spec windshield. Do NOT install standard glass on a Platinum with HUD. We confirm by VIN
Highlander HybridSame windshield as standard Highlander — identical glass part number. Hybrid drivetrain does not change glass
XSE / Bronze EditionSame windshield spec as other trims — unique body styling does not change glass part number
Cost — With TSS 2.0 Calibration$620 – $1,350 total · Most insurance policies cover this entirely
Installation Time60–90 min glass only · 3–4 hours with calibration
🔑
VIN is the fastest path to a correct quote on any Highlander: The Highlander's TSS rollout by model year — and the HUD option on Platinum — makes VIN lookup essential. A 2016 Highlander needs no calibration; a 2017 does. A 2022 Platinum needs HUD glass. Share your VIN when you call and we'll confirm the exact part, calibration requirement, and price in under a minute.

Our Honest Take on Highlander Calibration

Toyota's documentation requires calibration any time the windshield is removed on a TSS-equipped Highlander. That's the official position and we always inform customers of it clearly.

In practice, many non-calibrated replacements result in a system that continues to function. The camera re-mounts to the same bracket in the same position. That said, small variations in glass thickness or mount alignment can affect the camera's field of view, and TSS 2.0 on the 5th gen is more sensitive than TSS-P on the 4th gen.

Our recommendation for Highlanders: If you have comprehensive insurance, always calibrate — cost is covered entirely. If paying out of pocket, we recommend calibration on any 2017+ Highlander. If warning lights appear after a non-calibrated job, bring it back and we'll calibrate at cost.

When we calibrate, we always provide a printed completion report. If any warning lights return after our service, we redo the calibration at no charge.

Repair or Replace?

Toyota Highlander Windshield Repair vs. Replacement — Which Do You Need?

Here's how to decide — and why replacement is usually the right call on a modern Highlander.

✓ Full Replacement — Always Our Recommendation

  • New glass, clean seal, zero compromise
  • Backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty
  • New moldings and clips included every time
  • Required for any crack over 6 inches
  • Required for damage in driver's line of sight
  • The only safe option for 2017+ TSS Highlanders with camera-zone damage
  • Acoustic glass restored on 5th gen models

From $250 · Same-day mobile available throughout LA

△ Repair — Technically Possible, But Limited

  • Chip must be smaller than a quarter
  • Not in driver's direct line of sight
  • Not within 3 inches of windshield edge
  • No spreading cracks, single impact only
  • No warranty — resin can fail, crack can resume
  • Not recommended on any 2017+ TSS Highlander near the camera zone
  • Resin fill near camera zone can cause calibration issues

$95–$150 · We'll always tell you if replacement makes more sense

On a TSS-Equipped Highlander, Replacement Is Almost Always Worth It

A chip repair on a Highlander buys you time — but if that chip is anywhere near the camera zone at the top center of the windshield, resin fill can cause intermittent TSS warnings or calibration failure. On a 2020+ Highlander with TSS 2.0, the camera is more sensitive to optical distortion than on older models.

The math favors replacement: A chip repair runs $95–$150 with no warranty. A full replacement with calibration through insurance typically costs you nothing. We'll give you an honest assessment — if a repair is genuinely safe, we'll say so. If it's not, we'll tell you why.

FAQ

Toyota Highlander Windshield Replacement FAQ

Common questions from Toyota Highlander owners across all years and trims.

How much does a Toyota Highlander windshield replacement cost in Los Angeles?
3rd gen Highlanders (2008–2013) and pre-TSS 4th gen (2014–2016): $250–$470 all-in. 4th gen with TSS-P (2017–2019) and all 5th gen (2020–2025) Highlanders with Toyota Safety Sense™ run $620–$1,350 including mandatory static calibration. Call (626) 689-7975 with your year and trim for an exact price in under a minute.
Does my Toyota Highlander need ADAS calibration after windshield replacement?
It depends on your year. 3rd gen (2008–2013): no calibration needed. 4th gen 2014–2016: no calibration needed. 4th gen 2017–2019: yes — TSS-P became standard on all trims for the 2017 model year. 5th gen 2020–2025: yes — TSS 2.0 is standard on every trim. If you're unsure, look for a camera at the top center of your windshield behind the rearview mirror.
Does the Highlander Hybrid need a different windshield than the standard Highlander?
No. The Highlander Hybrid and standard Highlander share identical windshields for every generation. The drivetrain — gas, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid — has zero impact on the windshield part number. Some shops charge a premium for "hybrid windshield glass." There is no such thing on a Highlander. If you're being quoted extra for a hybrid windshield, you're being overcharged.
What is Toyota Safety Sense™ and when did the Highlander get it?
Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) is Toyota's suite of ADAS features that rely on a forward-facing camera mounted behind the windshield. TSS-P became standard on all Highlander trims for the 2017 model year. The 5th gen (2020–2025) upgraded to TSS 2.0 with additional features including Lane Tracing Assist and Road Sign Assist. Both versions require static calibration after windshield replacement.
Does the Highlander Platinum HUD require special windshield glass?
Yes. The Platinum trim on 5th gen (2020–2025) Highlanders includes a Heads-Up Display that projects speed, navigation, and safety information onto the windshield. The replacement glass must include the correct optical projection zone. Installing standard glass on a HUD-equipped Platinum results in a distorted or unclear HUD image. We always confirm HUD by VIN before ordering glass.
Will my insurance cover the Toyota Highlander windshield replacement including calibration?
Yes — comprehensive auto insurance covers windshield replacement including ADAS calibration. For a 2017+ Highlander with TSS where the total reaches $620–$1,350, most policyholders with comprehensive coverage owe little or nothing. We handle the entire claim process with GEICO, State Farm, Progressive, Allstate, Farmers, USAA, and all major carriers.
How long does a Toyota Highlander windshield replacement take?
Glass-only replacement takes 60–90 minutes. With Toyota Safety Sense™ calibration, expect 3–4 hours total. Drive-away time with our fast-cure urethane adhesive is 60 minutes minimum. We perform the entire job — glass replacement and static calibration — at your location with our mobile service.
Can I drive with a cracked Toyota Highlander windshield in California?
A crack in the driver's primary line of sight is illegal and unsafe in California. On a 2017+ TSS Highlander, a spreading crack that reaches the camera zone at the top center of the windshield can trigger safety system warnings. California law also prohibits cracks in the area swept by windshield wipers. Call us for same-day mobile service — do not wait.
