Toyota Tacoma Windshield Replacement — Common Questions Answered

The most important things to know before you call, regardless of your Tacoma's year or trim.

How much does it cost?
$240–$460 for 2005–2017 Tacomas without ADAS. $620–$1,300 for 2018–2025 models with Toyota Safety Sense™, including mandatory calibration.
Does my Tacoma need ADAS calibration?
Yes, if your Tacoma is 2018 or newer. TSS-P became standard on all 3rd gen trims from 2018 on. 2016–2017 3rd gen Tacomas had no TSS. All 2nd gen models (2005–2015) have no ADAS.
Access Cab vs. Double Cab — does it matter?
Yes — critically. Access Cab and Double Cab Tacomas have physically different windshield profiles. Ordering "Tacoma windshield" without specifying cab style gets the wrong glass 50% of the time. We always confirm by VIN.
Does my TRD Pro need special glass?
No. TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Sport all use the same windshield within the same cab style. What determines your glass is your cab style and generation — not the TRD trim.
Will insurance cover it?
Yes — comprehensive coverage covers glass and calibration. We handle the full claim. Most 2018+ Tacoma owners with comprehensive coverage pay nothing out of pocket.
How long does it take?
60–90 min glass-only. 2.5–4 hours with ADAS calibration. Drive-away safe in 60 min with fast-cure urethane adhesive.
I have a 2024–2025 Tacoma — what's different?
The 4th gen is a complete redesign with a larger windshield, new platform, and TSS 2.5+ standard. Access Cab discontinued in some markets. We stock 4th gen glass — call for availability.
Can you come to my home or office?
Yes — free mobile service throughout Los Angeles. No driving a cracked windshield across town.

Toyota Tacoma Windshield by Generation — What Your Year Needs

Your year and cab style determine your glass type, whether calibration is required, and your total cost. Select your generation below.

⚠️
Access Cab vs. Double Cab — Critical Ordering Issue: Access Cab and Double Cab Tacomas have physically different windshields. A shop that orders "Tacoma windshield" without specifying the cab style will get the wrong glass roughly 50% of the time. This is one of the most common mistakes in the auto glass industry on this vehicle. We always confirm cab style by VIN before ordering — every single time.
2005–2015 · 2nd Gen
2016–2023 · 3rd Gen
2024–2025 · 4th Gen
ℹ️
2nd Gen (2005–2015): No ADAS, no forward camera. Available in Access Cab and Double Cab — each has a distinct windshield profile with different part numbers. The most straightforward Tacoma replacement: glass only, no calibration, quality aftermarket works perfectly.
FeatureDetails
Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS)Not Available — No calibration needed on any 2nd gen Tacoma
Cab StylesAccess Cab and Double Cab — different windshield profiles, different part numbers
Glass TypeStandard laminated windshield on all trims
Acoustic GlassNot available on 2nd gen Tacoma
Typical Cost$240 – $400 total (glass + labor + moldings)
Installation Time60–90 minutes · Drive-away in 60 min
Our Glass RecommendationQuality aftermarket (Pilkington or Fuyao) — OEM not required
TrimsBase, PreRunner, X-Runner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road — all same glass within cab style
ℹ️
3rd Gen (2016–2023): Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) became standard on all trims starting in 2018. The 2016–2017 model years had no TSS — no forward camera, no calibration needed. From 2018 on, every Tacoma trim requires calibration after windshield replacement. Access Cab and Double Cab still have different glass profiles.
FeatureDetails
TSS (2016–2017)Not Available — No calibration needed on 2016–2017 Tacomas
TSS-P (2018–2023)Standard on ALL trims — every 2018–2023 Tacoma has a camera-equipped windshield
Calibration Required?Yes (2018–2023 only) — camera bracket mounts behind windshield and must be recalibrated after glass removal
Calibration TypeStatic — vehicle stationary, manufacturer-spec targets placed at precise distances. 1–2 hours
Cab StylesAccess Cab and Double Cab — different windshield profiles, different part numbers
Glass TypeStandard laminated windshield on all trims
Safety Features Affected (2018+)Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Automatic High Beams
TRD TrimsTRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport — all same glass within cab style
Cost — No ADAS (2016–2017)$240 – $460 total (glass + labor + moldings)
Cost — With TSS Calibration (2018–2023)$620 – $1,100 total · Insurance often covers this fully
Installation Time60–90 min glass only · 2.5–4 hours with calibration
⚠️
2016–2017 vs. 2018+ — the TSS cutoff: The 2016–2017 3rd gen Tacoma looks nearly identical to the 2018–2023 on the outside, but the 2016–2017 models have no forward-facing camera and no Toyota Safety Sense. Many shops incorrectly quote calibration on a 2016–2017 Tacoma. We verify by VIN — never by model year alone — to ensure you're not paying for calibration you don't need.
⚠️
4th Gen (2024–2025): Complete redesign on a new platform. Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5+ is standard on all trims. The windshield is larger than the 3rd gen. Access Cab has been discontinued in some markets — Double Cab is the standard configuration. Every windshield replacement requires calibration.

Quick check: Look for a small black camera bracket near the top center of your windshield, behind the rearview mirror. If it's there, you have Toyota Safety Sense™ and calibration is required. Share your VIN when you call and we'll confirm the exact part, cab style, glass spec, and total price immediately.

Glass Options Explained

Toyota Tacoma Windshield Glass — OEM, OEE & Aftermarket

The right glass depends on your year, cab style, and whether your Tacoma has Toyota Safety Sense™.

💡
Tacoma-specific note: The 4th gen (2024–2025) Tacoma has a larger windshield than the 3rd gen, and early aftermarket availability is still catching up. Generic glass on a 2018+ TSS-equipped Tacoma carries higher-than-average risk of calibration failure due to inconsistent glass thickness near the camera mount area. We stock OEE-grade glass from Pilkington and Fuyao for all Tacoma generations.

Our Honest Take on Tacoma Calibration

Toyota's manufacturer documentation recommends calibration any time the windshield is removed on a TSS-equipped Tacoma. That's the official position — and we always make customers aware of it.

In practice, we do perform non-calibrated replacements. In the vast majority of cases the system continues to function normally — the camera re-mounts to the same bracket in the same position. We've seen this consistently across hundreds of Tacoma jobs.

Our recommendation: If you're using insurance, calibrate — the cost is covered and there's no reason not to. If you're paying out of pocket and your TSS was working perfectly before, a non-calibrated replacement is a reasonable choice. If warning lights appear after the job, bring it back and we'll calibrate at cost.

When we calibrate, we always provide a printed completion report. If any warning lights return after our service, we redo the calibration at no charge — no questions asked.

Repair or Replace?

Toyota Tacoma Windshield Repair vs. Replacement — Which Do You Need?

Full replacement is almost always the better call. Here's when repair is technically possible — and why we lean toward replacement even then.

✓ Full Replacement — Always Our Recommendation

  • New glass, clean seal, zero compromise
  • Backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty
  • New moldings and clips included every time
  • Required for any crack over 6 inches
  • Required for damage in driver's line of sight
  • The only safe option for TSS Tacomas (2018+)

From $240 · Same-day mobile available throughout LA

△ Repair — Technically Possible, But...

  • Chip must be smaller than a quarter
  • Not in driver's direct line of sight
  • Not within 3 inches of windshield edge
  • No spreading cracks, single impact only
  • No warranty — resin can fail or crack can return
  • Not recommended on any TSS Tacoma (2018+)

$95–$150 · We'll always tell you if replacement makes more sense

Why Chip Repair Is Riskier on the 2018+ Tacoma

On a 2018+ Tacoma with Toyota Safety Sense™, the forward camera reads through the windshield glass. Even a chip that appears far from the camera field of view can cause calibration issues after resin injection — resin changes the optical properties of the glass in that zone, and TSS can fail calibration or generate intermittent warnings as a result.

If the chip is within 8 inches of the camera mount area (top center of the glass), we will almost always recommend replacement over repair on a TSS Tacoma. The math is straightforward: a repair costs $95–$150 with no warranty. A full replacement with calibration through insurance typically costs nothing. We'll give you an honest assessment either way.

FAQ

Toyota Tacoma Windshield Replacement FAQ

Common questions from Toyota Tacoma owners across all years and trims.

How much does a Toyota Tacoma windshield replacement cost in Los Angeles?
Pre-2018 Tacomas without ADAS: $240–$460 all-in. Any 2018 or newer Tacoma with Toyota Safety Sense™ runs $620–$1,300 including mandatory calibration. 4th gen (2024–2025) models are at the higher end due to the larger windshield. Call (626) 689-7975 with your year and trim for an exact price in under a minute.
Does my Toyota Tacoma need ADAS calibration after windshield replacement?
Yes, if your Tacoma is 2018 or newer. Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS-P) became standard on all trims starting in 2018. The 2016–2017 3rd gen Tacomas had no TSS — no calibration needed. All 2nd gen Tacomas (2005–2015) have no ADAS and never require calibration.
Do Access Cab and Double Cab Tacomas use the same windshield?
No — this is one of the most common mistakes in the auto glass industry. Access Cab and Double Cab Tacomas have physically different windshield profiles and different part numbers. A shop that orders "Tacoma windshield" without specifying cab style will get the wrong glass roughly half the time. We always confirm cab style by VIN before ordering.
Does my TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, or TRD Sport need special glass?
No. All TRD trims use the same windshield within the same cab style and generation. What determines your glass part number is your cab style (Access Cab vs. Double Cab), generation, and whether you have TSS — not the TRD package. We verify everything by VIN.
What changed on the 2024–2025 Tacoma windshield?
The 4th gen (2024–2025) Tacoma is a complete redesign on Toyota's TNGA-F platform. It has a larger windshield than the 3rd gen with entirely new part numbers. TSS 2.5+ is standard on all trims. The Access Cab has been discontinued in some markets. 3rd gen glass will not fit a 4th gen Tacoma and vice versa.
Can my Tacoma self-calibrate after windshield replacement?
No. Toyota Tacomas with TSS do not self-calibrate after windshield replacement. Any shop claiming otherwise is not following Toyota's service requirements. Static calibration with manufacturer-grade equipment is required every time the windshield is removed on a TSS-equipped Tacoma.
Will my insurance cover Toyota Tacoma windshield replacement in Los Angeles?
Yes — comprehensive auto insurance covers windshield replacement including ADAS calibration. For a 2018+ Tacoma where the total reaches $620–$1,300, most policyholders with comprehensive coverage owe little or nothing out of pocket. We handle the entire claim with GEICO, State Farm, Progressive, Allstate, Farmers, USAA, and all major carriers.
Can I drive with a cracked windshield in California?
A crack in the driver's primary line of sight is illegal and unsafe in California. Temperature swings in LA cause cracks to spread fast — a small chip can become a full replacement job within days on a Tacoma. Call us for a same-day mobile assessment anywhere in Los Angeles.
