Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE Calibration After Windshield Replacement

IQ.DRIVE is Volkswagen's suite of camera-based safety systems. When the windshield is replaced, the camera mounted behind it may shift — and calibration ensures every safety feature works correctly.

What IQ.DRIVE Does
IQ.DRIVE uses a forward-facing camera mounted behind the rearview mirror. It powers Travel Assist, Lane Assist, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, and Light Assist (automatic high beams). IQ.DRIVE became available on select VW models starting in 2019 and is standard on all trims from 2022 on most models.

What Happens When We Replace the Glass
The front camera bracket is removed with the old windshield and re-mounted to the new one. Even a fraction of a degree of shift in camera angle throws off the system's reference points. Calibration re-establishes those points using manufacturer-spec targets — our method is static only, the most precise approach available.

VW-Specific Glass Quality Requirements
Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE camera is sensitive to glass optical quality. We use Saint-Gobain/Sekurit (VW's primary OEM supplier), Pilkington, AGC, or Fuyao Ohio — all approved for ADAS-equipped VW models. We never install generic aftermarket glass on any IQ.DRIVE-equipped Volkswagen.

VW recommends calibration after every windshield replacement on IQ.DRIVE-equipped vehicles. We always tell customers this. If you're using insurance, calibrate — it's covered. Paying cash? A non-calibrated replacement is a reasonable choice if your system was working perfectly before. We'll give you both options honestly.
